Symbol of a gift

Dutch: De Vierdaagse van Nijmegen leverde een stoet van inspiratie op! Dit jongetje stond ineens voor mijn neus. Kon het niet laten om te knippen. “Of het goed was”, vroeg ik. Hij knikte blij en bleef heel mooi voor mij poseren. In alle drukte heb ik zijn naam niet gevraagd noch een adres, want woops, hij was weer weg. Zou ik het jongetje nog kunnen vinden?

English: The walking event in my neighborhood was, actually for me quit unexpected, a train of big inspiration going by. This little boy for instance. I asked him to please stop, while he was running along the pavement. He did and posted smiling with the flowers and the big balloon, definitely meant for a relative who walked the last miles purely on perseverance and could use this last gift to endure. Before I knew it, he was gone. No name No address… perhaps it doesn’t matter…. He is just the symbol of a gift, waiting for anyone.

My Bio

I am a Dutch artist, living in the southeastern part of Holland. Both I do for the last 10 years of my life.

As a kid I draw full time, won several competitions. The school director urged my parents to put me on an academy for arts. I guess it was forsaken that I do something with it in my future working life. I choose not to. There was a lot more to learn in the world which I didn't know off. I end up in corporate life, mostly as management assistant. I learned a lot. Also I had to consider the time, a realistic artist had no chance in the seventies and eighties. And it didn't help that my parents were totally against an artist career. My creative activities mostly were in music. I had a choir for 10 years and played the piano, mostly my own singer/songer writings. Kate Bush was my favorite back than, but I can't sing so high. Glad my parents didn't complain about that ;-).

But at the end of the nineties I broke... after a few misfortunes in my life, I had to convess: I have to do where I am great at. I started drawing again and discovered that I still could do it well. A journalist discovered my pencil drawings and I end up making weekly columns in the newspaper. They also asked me to write for it. And I did. A world of new opportunities opened for me. But being an artist, writing for the newspaper and also caring for two little children on my own was a bit too much. I choose to be a full time dedicating artist. And bit by bit I am beginning to understand it and perhaps the most important, I am beginning to understand myself.
